Easter Traditions in Bulgaria

A Celebration of Faith

Easter is one of the most significant Christian holidays, carrying a message of faith, hope, and new beginnings. In Bulgaria, it is celebrated with many customs that bring families together around the festive table, creating a sense of warmth and unity.

Easter Traditions in Bulgaria

The Easter celebrations begin with Lazarus Saturday (Lazarovden) and Palm Sunday (Tsvetnitsa), which precede Holy Week. In the days leading up to Easter, Bulgarians observe several traditions that give the holiday its unique character.

Egg Dyeing – One of the most beloved rituals is dyeing eggs, with the first egg always being red – a symbol of life and the blood of Christ. According to tradition, the eldest woman in the family makes a cross with the first egg on the children’s foreheads for health and good luck.

Baking Kozunak (Easter Bread) – The Easter kozunak is an essential part of the festive table. It symbolizes the body of Christ and is prepared with care and love to be fluffy and aromatic.

Midnight Liturgy – On Easter Eve, believers gather in churches to celebrate Christ’s Resurrection with lit candles and prayers.

Egg Tapping Game – The tradition states that whoever ends up with an unbroken egg will be healthy and lucky throughout the year.

Roast Lamb – Symbolizing sacrifice and renewal, lamb is the centerpiece of the Easter meal, often roasted with fresh herbs and garlic.

Kozunak (Sweet Easter Bread) – A soft, sweet bread enriched with eggs, butter, and sugar, often flavored with vanilla or lemon zest and sometimes sprinkled with almonds or raisins.

Boiled and Dyed Eggs – Used in egg-tapping games and as a festive decoration on the table.

Green Spring Salad – A fresh mix of lettuce, radishes, green onions, and cucumbers, often seasoned with vinegar and olive oil.

Easter Soup (Shkembe or Lamb Soup) – Some families prepare a warming soup using lamb offal, garlic, and herbs.
