Luxury, success and unity at Lighthouse Golf Resort
Bulgaria hosted its second-ever professional European Tour tournament at the Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort from September 6 to 9, 2018. Led by Ian Woosnam, golf professionals aged 50 and over participated, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Lighthouse Golf Course, which opened in September 2008. The Ministry of Tourism in Bulgaria was the main partner.
David MacLaren, Head of the Staysure Tour and European Tour Properties, highlighted the unique chance for regular golfers to play alongside legends on an impressive golf course at the European Tour Properties Senior Classic. George Tchouklev, CEO of Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort, expressed pride in hosting the event, recognizing the rapid growth of golf in Bulgaria over the past six years as a testament to their successful efforts.
Among the eminent world-class names in the tournament were Jarmo Sandelin – champion of the European tour Turespana Open De Canaria champion, 1995, Santiago Luna – multiple winners of the ETP Senior Classic tournament, David Shacklady, Peter Streeter, Magnus Attlevi and Peter Baker, who defeated Nick Faldo in a dramatic play-off to win the 1988 Benson and Hedges International Open.
The tournament provided a unique opportunity for all golfers in Bulgaria to play along with the world’s senior professional golfers. The participants competed in several different formats – standard pro-am on September 5th and 6th, Alliance pro-am on the 7th and 8th. The ‘Alliance’ format of the tournament allowed amateurs to play alongside the line-up of players during the first and second rounds of the event which took place on the 7th and 8th Sept.
The 2018 European Tour Properties Senior Classic marked the pinnacle of golf in Bulgaria, featuring a professionals-only round on September 9th with a €250,000 prize fund. Winners Magnus Atlevi, Stephen Dodd, and James Kingston were crowned amidst celebrations for Lighthouse Golf Resort’s tenth anniversary. The event showcased Bulgaria’s golf potential, supported by the Ministry of Tourism. Explore the highlights at https://www.europeantour.com/staysuretour/european-tour-properties-senior-classic.
